Many of you might know about the Kyloring Housing Cooperative already. However, we gained quite a few new newsletter readers lately, so it’s a good time to provide an update on this unique project.
The Kyloring Housing Cooperative is a stand alone cooperative housing project within the Witchcliffe Ecovillage, developed by Co-operation Housing, and designed for individuals aged 55 and over. Kyloring offers a unique approach to housing that prioritizes collaboration, sustainability, and mutual support. Situated centrally within the Witchcliffe Ecovillage, Kyloring benefits from a community committed to environmental stewardship and social diversity. Unlike conventional group housing projects, Kyloring is driven by its future residents. They actively participate in the project’s creation, ensuring their needs and preferences are met. The absence of developer profit allows homes to be provided at cost price, making Kyloring an affordable and inclusive option. All residents can engage in workshops alongside professionals such as Co-operation Housing, H+H Architects, and The Sociocracy Consulting Group. Together, they design not only individual homes but also shared facilities, including a common house.
While Kyloring does not offer assisted living or nursing facilities, residents actively support one another. Tasks like meal delivery, dog walking, and medication pickup foster a sense of community and well-being.
The number of residents has been growing steadily in the last couple of months (15 in total) and they have now completed their mission and vision statement:
Their site plan, landscape and house plans are done and they are “very much looking forward to the day the first shovel of soil is turned to begin our build”, says Lumarie McGuinness, director and future resident of the Kyloring Housing Cooperative.
“As a group, we have spent time wandering around and meditating on our block, visioning our future here. When we gather for weekends we come down and visualise a healthy happy wonderful community, living within the greater WEV community.
Coming to the WEV open day was wonderful, inspiring and fun and I am very excited about joining you all here with our Kyloring family.”
